2012 Hyundai Accent

A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.
Now that Hyundai has finally gained respectability with consumers and critics with such models as the Genesis, Equus, Sonata, and new Elantra, the automaker is looking to dominate the subcompact segment with its all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent. No longer an also-ran, second-tier competitor, the new Accent has upped its game substantially. In equipment, style, and pricing, it poses the most serious and credible threat to the Fiesta and Fit to date. The one casualty of this re-imagining is the three-door hatch. In fact, the only three-door models in the segment are a version of the Toyota Yaris and Fiat's recently introduced 500 subcompact, which isn't offered in any other style.
So what's there to get excited about with Hyundai's new entry-level offering? Try the segment's only direct-injected engine, which also now happens to be the most powerful, at 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. That bests the next-most-powerful Fiesta by 18 horsepower and 11 lb-ft. The 1.6 liter DOHC engine also features dual continuously variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. With all this technological wizardry, the Accent still manages a segment-leading 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. True, certain trims of the Fiesta manage the big 4-0 on the highway, buy Hyundai is proud of and quick to point out that the Accent's fuel economy ratings apply across the board, regardless of body style, transmission, or trim level.
Speaking of transmissions, it's six speeds for everyone, whether you're of the shift-it-yourself or slushbox persuasion. Automatic models also include an Active Eco button that further optimizes fuel efficiency up to 7 percent in real-world driving, Hyundai claims. However, the fuel frugality in this mode usually comes at the expense of throttle response and overall driving enjoyment.
As if class-leading power and fuel economy weren't enough, Hyundai is also claiming head-of-class cargo capacity, besting even the capacious Fit by 0.6 cubic feet with the rear seat up. However, the Fit's clever interior packaging does give it a 9.8 cubic-foot edge in hauling volume with the rear seats folded.
But wait, there's more. The Accent also features the only segment-standard four-wheel disc brakes. Nearly all its primary competitors have rear drums, save for the Fiat, which is a more premium offering a la the Mini Cooper.
In terms of size, the Hyundai boasts the longest wheelbase in the segment at 101.2 inches, roughly three inches longer than most of its peers. Overall length is also on the longer side, with the hatch stretching 162 inches from stem to stern, and the sedan totaling 172 inches. Only the Fiesta sedan is longer, at 173.6 inches.
Although the new Accent five-door is narrowly edged out by the voluminous Fit in overall passenger volume at 90.1 cubic feet versus 90.8 cubic feet, it bests the Mazda 2 and Fiesta by 3.7 and 5.7 cubic feet, respectively. The sedan is slightly smaller at 89.7 cubic feet, but hardly enough that anyone will notice.
In terms of styling, the Accent five-door most closely resembles the Fiesta. In fact, when we first laid eyes on it, many of us said, "Looks like a Fiesta with the Elantra's nose." And we mean that as the highest possible compliment, as the Fiesta is regarded by many as being the handsomest subcompact hatch. The rear has a hint of the BMW 1 Series hatch (which isn't sold in the U.S.), but overall the Accent hatch has a smart, contemporary look that should appeal to a broad spectrum of the car-buying public. The sedan likewise has a fresh look, but it's not quite as bold and distinctive as the slightly larger Elantra, and the rear angle has a slight mini-Buick look to it. Regardless, both models are a major stylistic improvement over their nondescript predecessors.

Although the Mazda and the Fiesta are the current staff favorites among the subcompact class, the new Accent looks to be a strong contender for our affections. Rest assured, as soon as we can get our hands on one for a first drive and comparison test, we plan on pitting it against the current class leaders.

2012 Honda City

Honda City to undergo mid-life facelift, diesel variant still a long time away.
The Honda City has been around for three years now and while it has successfully remained the king of the executive sedan throne, its supremacy has not been daunted by the likes of the Volkswagen Vento and the new Hyundai Verna – especially by their diesel variants. In fact, in its combined sales, the Volkswagen Vento overtook the City’s sales last month and looks like it will only worsen for the Japanese carmaker, thanks to the rising fuel prices.
While Honda has already confirmed that they indeed need a diesel but the oil burner for the City is atleast two years away, the Japanese carmaker will still go ahead give the City its mid-life makeover to tackle the new competitors. The City’s design is already in line with Honda’s current design language – so much that the upcoming Civic actually looks like a bloated Civic. So don’t expect any outrageous changes.
The City facelift will instead have subtle tweaks to its design to make it look sportier than the current model. We expect the trademark new honeycomb-mesh grille with the single chrome slat to make it as standard fitment on the new 2012 Honda City. Expect the headlights to get minor design tweaks while the taillights could get an LED treatment.  The interiors should get minor tweaks too, with new upholstery options, redesigned console or dashboard elements, added features etc.

There is a fair chance that the new 2012 Honda City facelift could take a lot of design cues from the Honda City Concept that was shown in Australia back in 2008. The 2012 Honda City facelift is expected to make its debut in Thailand in September 2011. Expect the new facelift Honda City to India by Diwali 2011 or at least by January at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi.

2012 Mazda3

Mazda has released today the first images and details of the new 2012 Mazda3 facelift which will have its debut at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show. The new 2012 Mazda3 facelift will be the first model to feature the new SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. These new technologies will offer the 2012 Mazda3 facelift better torque at low- and mid-range engine speeds which will result in an improved fuel consumption.
Apart from the new engine, the 2012 Mazda3 facelift comes with new front and rear bumpers with a redesigned front grill, fog bezels and front headlamps. The 2012 Mazda3 facelift will also feature new 16 inch and 17 inch alloy wheels.
The sky's the limit at Mazda's display at the 2011 Canadian International AutoShow. Making its debut is the 2012 Mazda3, which, in addition to receiving a facelift, will also offer the option of Mazda's new SKYACTIV-G petrol engine and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission when it is launched in Canada later this year. This initial application of Mazda's SKYACTIV engine and transmission technologies - the first time they will be employed in a production vehicle - will realize higher torque at low- and mid-range engine speeds resulting in better drivability with less fuel consumption in everyday driving.
Mazda Motor Corporation has been developing its new technologies under the SKYACTIV concept and they include completely new petrol and diesel engines, transmissions and vehicle architectures. Mazda's SKYACTIV Technologies will be launched successively beginning with the new petrol engine and automatic transmission in 2011.

Mazda has stated that its goal is to improve fuel efficiency by 30 percent by 2015 (compared to 2008 levels). This will be accomplished through SKYACTIV Technologies, which focus on improving the
efficiency of internal combustion core technologies in association with vehicle weight reduction. Then, gradually, electrical devices such as idle-stop, regenerative braking and hybrid systems will be introduced to further improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition to the new SKYACTIV engine and transmission offerings, the 2012 Mazda3 will receive new front and rear bumpers with a redesigned front grill, fog bezels and front headlamps. New 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels complete the 2012 exterior updates.

Another vehicle making its first appearance in Toronto is the new 2012 Mazda5 multi-activity
vehicle. Since its introduction as a 2006 model, the Mazda5 has redefined the concept of compact transportation by offering seating for up to six people in three easily configurable rows, as well as with unique styling and driving dynamics not typical in vehicles of this type. Over 50,000 Mazda5s have been sold since its introduction to Canada and it is the second best selling nameplate in Mazda Canada's line-up.

The 2012 Mazda5, on sale now across Canada, incorporates motifs from Mazda's "Nagare" design language which, inspired by the beauty of nature, presents an elegant look not found in any existing vehicle today. Changes run deep under the skin too, as the vehicle is now powered by a 157-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Outstanding fuel economy and unexpected driveability are carried over from the previous model, as are the vehicle's sliding rear doors and flexible seating for up to six people. The 2012 Mazda5 is available in two trim grades with a starting price of $21,795.

Rounding out the Mazda display is the full line-up of 2011 models, including the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, MX-5, RX-8, Tribute, CX-9 and, of special note, the 2011 CX-7, which is now being offered with leather seating, or all-wheel-drive, below $30,000.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze

What's New for 2012

There are no major changes for the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.
Introduction

Researching a small car on Edmunds.com to find a top pick used to be pretty straightforward. Chances are we'd point you to a Honda Civic, a Mazda 3 or, if you really wanted to fly your freak flag, a Subaru Impreza. But now things are different. There's been a regime change for small cars, and one of the rebel leaders is the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.

The Cruze debuted last year as an all-new model and has gone on to be both a sales and critical success. The reasons are multifold, but the bottom line is that the Cruze is simply a quality car. It looks sharp inside and out. Attention to detail is apparent the first time you close the door and notice it shuts with a solid "thunk." The feature content is up to date with options such as hard-drive-based navigation and keyless ignition/entry. Chevy's come a long way since the Cobalt.

On the move, the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze impresses with capable handling and a quiet cabin. Under the hood you have a choice of two engines. Base LS models have a 136-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, but most Cruzes actually come with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine. Horsepower is about the same from this smaller engine (138 hp), but torque rises significantly to give the Cruze a boost in around-town acceleration. The turbo also sees duty in the Cruze Eco variant. Thanks to various tweaks, the Eco achieves an impressive 42 mpg highway EPA rating.

That said, looking at other models is still a wise idea. The redesigned Ford Focus is similarly impressive and holds advantages in handling and technology features. The stylish Hyundai Elantra is equally well rounded and arguably a better value. And even though they're not the dominant choices they once were, the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 are still great cars. But the fact remains that the small car segment has changed, and the Chevy Cruze is a top contender.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze is a small sedan that comes in four main trim levels: LS, Eco, LT and LTZ.

The LS includes 16-inch steel wheels, OnStar, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, a six-way (manual) adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, a trip computer, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. A Connectivity package adds Bluetooth, a USB port and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

The Eco is equipped similarly to the LS but is optimized for maximum fuel efficiency with aerodynamic improvements, lightweight alloy wheels, low-rolling-resistance tires, a smaller fuel tank and a few minor feature deletions to further reduce weight.

The LT actually comprises 1LT and 2LT subsets. The 1LT comes with a turbocharged engine, cruise control, color-keyed power outside mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and the contents of the Connectivity package.

The 2LT differentiates itself with 16-inch alloy wheels, remote vehicle start, cruise control, a sport-tuned suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a six-way power driver seat. The Cruze LTZ adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rear park assist, keyless ignition and entry, automatic climate control, premium interior trim and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Many of the standard features found in the upper trim levels also can be had on lower trims as options. A hard-drive-based navigation system, a Pioneer nine-speaker premium sound system, a sunroof and an RS appearance package (unique front/rear fascias, foglights, rear spoiler) are all available on the upper trims.
Powertrains and Performance

The Cruze LS is powered by a 1.8-liter inline-4 that makes 136 hp and 123 pound-feet of torque. The Eco, LT and LTZ are fitted with a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-4 that generates 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. On the LS, LT and Eco, power flows to the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is optional on those trims and standard for the LTZ.

In Edmunds testing, a Cruze LTZ accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds, an average time for this class.

EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 25 mpg city/36 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined for the Cruze LS with the manual transmission and 22/35/27 mpg with the automatic. The turbocharged engine (LT and LTZ) with either transmission receives 26/38/30 mpg estimates.

The fuel-economy-focused Cruze Eco earns a laudable 28 mpg city/42 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined with the manual transmission and 26/39/31 with the automatic.
Safety

All 2012 Chevrolet Cruze models come with stability control, antilock brakes, full-length side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and front and rear side impact airbags as standard. All trims except the 2LT and LTZ have a front-disc/rear-drum brake setup; those models are upgraded to four-wheel disc brakes.

In government crash testing, the Cruze earned a top five-star rating for overall safety performance, with five stars in both frontal and side-impact categories. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Cruze received a top score of "Good" in both frontal-offset and side-impact testing. In Edmunds brake testing, a Cruze LTZ stopped from 60 mph in 122 feet, a good distance for this class of car.
Interior Design and Special Features

The Cruze's "twin cockpit" interior design and two-tone color schemes deliver an upscale ambience. Overall interior quality is respectable, too, with soft-touch materials in the right places and very little that's shiny plastic. For the most part, the Cruze's controls are straightforward, though the optional navigation system can be a bit awkward to use when it comes to inputting information.

The Cruze's front seats are a bit narrow, which might be an issue for some drivers, but they offer plenty of adjustment and are both supportive and comfortable. A low cushion for the backseat diminishes comfort for longer-limbed riders, whose thighs will have minimal support. Actual legroom is only average for the segment; you'll find more space in the Civic and Volkswagen Jetta. Considerably above average, however, is the Cruze's large trunk, which measures an impressive 15.4 cubic feet.
Driving Impressions

The most surprising characteristic of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze is its combination of genuinely athletic handling with a comfortable, controlled ride quality. The Cruze's chassis isn't particularly sophisticated as far as economy cars go, but its design ensures secure handling and a compliant -- but not mushy -- ride. The standard suspension rides as well and as quietly as just about any compact car, while the sport suspension on the 2LT and LTZ is firmer, though without harshness.

Most drivers should be satisfied with either of the Cruze's engines. The upscale turbocharged engine is pretty average in terms of outright acceleration, but it's peppier around town thanks to its increased torque. The main issue, however, is the automatic transmission. Programmed for maximum fuel economy, it's reluctant to downshift for quick acceleration and passing unless you really boot the throttle.

Kia Soul 2012

Kia Motors America (KMA) celebrates the world premiers of the all-new 2012 Kia Rio sub-compact sedan and the comprehensively upgraded 2012 Kia Soul at the 2011 New York International Auto Show.

The product that began Kia Motors' design-led transformation returns to New York with a fresh and updated look, more power, and the same funky demeanor that consumers all around the world have come to love from this compact crossover. The hugely successful Kia Soul is fine-tuned for 2012 with a significant number of technology and powertrain enhancements to deliver more power and improved fuel efficiency.

"After just two model years, we've given the 2012 Soul significant improvements in power, style and fuel economy, making this iconic vehicle the perfect package for consumers looking for something a little outside the box," said Kia's Michael Sprague. "The Soul has always stood out from the crowd and is responsible for bringing new customers to the Kia brand and positioning the company for a series of record-breaking successes. With gas prices on the rise, this refresh adds even more style and fun-to-drive performance, while also improving fuel economy by 10 percent."

More Power, Less Fuel

The 2012 Kia Soul will amplify the fun-to-drive factor with significant horsepower increases, new six-speed transmissions and the ability to deliver up to 34 miles per gallon on the highway. A new 1.6-litre GDI engine produces 135HP (100kW), an 11 percent increase from the previous engine). For buyers looking for a greater boost in power, a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission - advanced technology that is rare in this segment.
This engine, which produces 160HP (119kW), a 13 percent increase from the previous engine, and 143 pound-feet (194Nm) of torque, is standard on the three Kia Soul models.

Kia calculates that fuel economy for the 1.6-litre is an impressive 28/34 mpg city/highway (8.4-6.9L/100km), 10 percent more efficient than the previous engine, while the 2.0-litre offers a fuel-sipping 27/33 mpg (8.7-7.1L/100km) for both the automatic and manual transmissions.

More Style & Refinement

In addition to the 2012 Soul's performance upgrades, the new model also introduces a number of significant design improvements. On the outside, Kia Soul is freshened with new projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, a redesigned hood and new front and rear bumpers. New and modern LED rear light clusters enhance the Kia Soul's unique design, while the overall shape of the vehicle has been finessed to give Soul a smoother and more streamlined silhouette.

Spacious, State-of-the-Art Interior

Kia Soul envelopes its passengers within a more high-tech, futuristic cabin for 2012, featuring a generous blend of technologies at tremendous overall value. Soul was a recipient of the Ward's AutoWorld "Grooviest Interior" award for 2010, and passengers in the 2012 model will find genuine comfort in the roomy cabin.

New for 2012, an Infinity premium audio system is available on Soul+ models and standard on Soul! and Soul sport models for a more robust listening experience. Also new for 2012 is the UVO powered by Microsoft® in-car hands-free communication and infotainment system. A Premium Package is also available with heated front seats, leather seat trim, automatic climate control, and a navigation system among its upscale comforts.

Peugeot 208 2012

After announcing that they are working on the 508, a car which is going to replace the 607 and the 407, Peugeot announced that they are working on a successor for their 207, which is going to be called Peugeot 208. The Peugeot 208 is going to be released in 2012 and will probably show a new design line which will also be used on the 508.

Under the hood, the 208 will feature new fuel efficient powerplants and the car will also come with a start/stop system which will further improve the car’s fuel consumption. The French carmaker hasn’t released other details about the successor of the 207, but we will probably get more information about it in the upcoming months.
